ARTICLE SUMMARY

Creating Canopies is an initiative by Landcare NSW and Greater Sydney Landcare aimed at transforming Greater Sydney into a cooler, greener urban oasis. Launched in 2020, the project focuses on planting native trees in areas with less than 30% canopy cover to combat urban heat and enhance green spaces. Supported by the NSW Government’s Greening our City program, it has already made significant strides.

In its first stage, Creating Canopies aimed to plant 100,000 native trees by the end of 2022. Despite challenges like COVID-19 and heavy rains, the project succeeded, hosting 163 events and engaging nearly 2,000 volunteers to plant the targeted trees.

With momentum building, Stage 2 commenced in 2023, with a goal of planting an additional 200,000 trees by 2025. So far, 145,442 trees have been planted, thanks to the efforts of 3,725 volunteers and 143 events, including participation from 35 corporate groups across 18 local government areas.

The initiative encourages community involvement, offering participants the chance to build a legacy, connect with like-minded individuals, and make a tangible difference in the environment. As the project approaches its final year, 54,558 trees remain to be planted in 2025. The first planting events will start in March, inviting everyone to contribute to this transformative effort for Greater Sydney.
