SUMMARY

Completed in 2022, the 7.3-hectare revitalisation project transformed a neglected public park suffering from environmental degradation, flooding, and poor accessibility into a vibrant, inclusive green space embraced by the community.

A central focus of the project was addressing the park's persistent flooding issues, which were exacerbated by a heavily polluted 714m canal. By employing a nature-based design approach, the canal was re-naturalised into a meandering waterway lined with riparian vegetation. This transformation not only improved water quality and enhanced biodiversity but also significantly increased the canal’s hydraulic capacity to manage heavy rainfall. The enhanced blue-green infrastructure now plays a critical role in mitigating flood risks in an area prone to unpredictable weather patterns and climate change.

Sustainability was a priority, with over 1,500 trees assessed for health and value. Many were preserved, while others were repurposed into park furniture or playground elements. Materials from the site, such as stones and felled tree logs, were upcycled into the construction and design, minimising environmental impact.

The park’s design also focused on inclusivity and connectivity. An infinity-shaped pedestrian bridge was constructed to link previously disconnected areas of the park, ensuring seamless accessibility while avoiding disruption to the existing natural environment.
